Starbucks Updates 2025 Dress Code to Highlight Iconic Green Apron

Starbucks is rolling out a new dress code for its baristas beginning May 12, 2025, aimed at unifying its store appearance and giving more visual prominence to the iconic green apron. The updated policy is part of a broader effort by CEO Laxman Narasimhan to enhance the overall Starbucks experience and brand identity.
What’s Changing in the Dress Code?
Under the new guidelines, baristas must wear solid black tops—either short-sleeved or long-sleeved—and khaki, black, or blue denim bottoms. Starbucks will provide employees with two branded black shirts at no cost to ease the transition. The move is meant to create consistency and ensure the green apron stands out as a visual symbol of the brand.
Part of a Larger Strategy
The uniform change is one component of a multi-pronged approach to revitalize the company. Other key changes include trimming the menu by 30% to improve speed and efficiency, returning ceramic mugs for in-store customers, and bringing back self-serve condiment stations.
Additionally, baristas are being encouraged to write notes on customer cups to foster personal connections. These changes follow feedback from employees and customers seeking more consistency, personalization, and warmth in-store.
"We want the green apron to shine, and to make every connection feel personal," said Starbucks leadership in a company update.
Mixed Reactions from Staff
While some employees welcome the streamlined look and clarity, others feel it limits personal expression. Starbucks says it will continue to gather feedback and adjust policies to ensure comfort and inclusivity across its workforce.
