Tax extension notice

The IRS has granted tax extensions to residents in 13 U.S. states affected by recent natural disasters. Taxpayers in Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee now have until November 3, 2025 to file and pay, following storms and tornadoes that struck earlier this month.

According to the IRS, extensions are automatic for those living in federally declared disaster areas. No separate application is required. Residents in other affected counties and states have different deadlines depending on their region.

Key Deadlines by State

May 1, 2025: Full states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina. Partial areas: Alaska (City & Borough of Juneau), New Mexico (Chaves County), and dozens of counties in Virginia.

October 15, 2025: Los Angeles County residents affected by wildfires.

November 3, 2025: Entire states of Arkansas, Kentucky, and Tennessee. West Virginia counties including Boone, Raleigh, and others also qualify.

"These taxpayers do not need to contact the agency to get this relief," said the IRS. "It’s provided automatically based on address of record."

Still Need More Time?

Taxpayers not in a disaster area can request an extension until October 15 to file, but must still pay owed taxes by April 15 to avoid penalties.
